Our History

NBS Technologies is a company that has been a significant player within the card manufacturing industry since 1975. While today we can’t imagine life without the plastic card, back in 1975, the card was still in its infancy. The Company’s founder believed that the plastic card was going places and he had a vision to be a part of the card’s amazing evolution. In the mid 1980’s the plastic card was basically a credit card or an ATM card. In the early 1990s, the card becomes a photo I.D. As we entered into 2000, another trend started. The card began its transformation into a smart card, used for bank cards and for cell phones. The card that was once a banking device has literally transformed into a portable computer you can put in your wallet.

NBS' Smart Card Solutions division breakthroughs include the flat-bed imprinter - the first generation card-acquiring technology for which NBS became famous - as well as North America’s first ever multi-embosser system in the plastic card sector - the Advantage - which became the industry standard. The Advantage took all the features of embossing, encoding, encrypting and putting them into a relatively compact tabletop machine. In the early 90’s, NBS continued to forge ahead with the introduction of the Horizon® - a high-speed, high-volume card personalization system along with the ImageMaster™ which provides flat card printing for smart card and magnetic stripe encoding. Each of these products continue to evolve and improve over time and remain a significant part of the NBS portfolio.

Our Javelin® line of card printers was launched in 1997 and quickly became a leader in the card printing arena. The Javelin® line of printers continues to evolve and grow as we address the ongoing needs of the card printing markets -- from mag stripe encoding to dual-sided colour printing capabilities, Javelin® card printers continue to lead the the desktop printing market in quality, reliability, flexibilty and affordability.

With the emergence of EMV™, the acquisition of UbiQ® Inc. in 2002, gave NBS the capability to offer the marketplace a complete, cross platform, EMV™ solution. The UbiQ® line of software products complements our portfolio of card printing/personalization systems and continues to keep pace with the technological advances in the card personalization industry. UbiQ continues to lead the EMV software development market with introductions of market leading software for remote and branch issuance environments with Xpressi™ complementing it's already state-of-the-art central issuance EMV software solution, PerosMaster™

NBS continued to round out it's smart card production offering through the acquisition of Cybernetix Microelectronique in 2004. This acquisition brought a host of smart card production and wafer handling capabilities that up until that time, NBS wasn't offering. From high speed milling & embedding to wafer handling and packing, NBS continues to perfect the original Cybertnetix offering by way of continued R&D and ensuring our products deliver the flexibilty and reliabilty our customers have come to know.

Along with significant strides within the card manufacturing and personalization industry, NBS has also been instrumental in the development of Canada's first debit terminal and the first debit POS system. More recently, NBS' Payment Solutions division has developed solutions for merchants in an increasingly online world, including the first wireless terminal in Canada and the first terminal that leverages the speed of IP and integrates value-added applications via a microbrowser touch screen interface.
